OPEN DOOR HISTORY

  • Open Door began in 1997 as Carpenter’s Church, created in response to a need for people experiencing homelessness to develop community, build relationships, and connect with resources.

    In 2004, redevelopment in North Overton led Open Door to move to its current location in South Overton on 13th Street. The move also created space for further growth and expansion.

  • No. From 1997 to 2010, Open Door, then known as Carpenter’s Church, operated under the oversight of Broadway Church of Christ. In 2011, Open Door became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by a Board of Directors.

    Since becoming an independent nonprofit in 2011, Open Door has grown from a small, grassroots church and community center into a Christian community development organization with expanded programs and services.

  • In 2017, the organization changed its name from Carpenter’s Church to Open Door. The new name better reflected the mission, the broader scope of services, and the organization’s continued growth.

OPEN DOOR COMMUNITY

  • No. Open Door is not an emergency overnight shelter. We provide long-term, relationship-based support through outreach, community, services, and housing.

  • Yes. While Open Door is a faith-based organization, religious adherence is not a requirement for participation in any of our programs.

    For Open Door, Christian community development means following Jesus by building relationships, seeking justice, walking with our neighbors, and helping create a community where people can experience belonging, stability, and hope.
